| CHOOSING TOP TREES FOR VIBRANT SPRING COLOR: UNITED STATES NATIONAL ARBORETUM |
The USNA works to introduce, evaluate, and release hardy trees for gardens and parks through their tree development programs. Careful tree selection means that the choice you make for your garden will thrive in your particular micro-climate, be pest and disease resistant, be well suited to amount of space you have available and perform beautifully for years. Trees return your initial investment in time, choosing, and planting for decades to come. A well placed, healthy flowering tree improves your home"s value, provides shelter and food for birds, and reduces energy costs by shading your house in summer and allowing sun to shine through in winter.
Some of the tree"s seen today include: Prunus, Flowering Cherry, Prunus "Yoshino", Malus "Adirondack", Cercis Canadensis, Cornus "Constellation", Cornus sericea "Silver and Gold", Cornus florida "Purple Glory", Cornus hybrid "Ruth Ellen", Cornus mas "Variegata", Cornelian Cherry, Cornus florida ssp. urbiniana, Mexican Crown Dogwood Cornus "Cherokee Chief"
The Flowering Tree Collection is just one aspect of the dramatic flower filled grounds of the USNA. Other important gardens include the spectacular Asian Garden, elegant Herb Garden and revered National Bonsai and Penjing Museum.

| EXPLORING AN ORGANIC GARDEN OF PLANT DELIGHTS WITH TONY AVENT: PLANT DELIGHTS NURSERY IN RALEIGH, NC. |
Dave visited with renowned plantsman, Tony Avent, at his garden and nursery outside of Raleigh, NC. The garden is an expression of his personal taste for plants and his constant search for excellent plant material that will survive the brutally hot summers of the South and stretch the limits of cold tolerance. His taste for the exotic and uncommon can be seen everywhere, including the pages of his witty and informative mail order catalogs.
Today we enjoyed Hostas, Arisaemas, Ferns, and the prairie native Baptisia.
Be warned: you must bring both your spirit of garden experimentation and your appreciation of Tony's sharp wit and dry humor to enjoy all that Plant Delights offers.
