Gardens with a pride of place: The New American Garden style
Wolfgang Oehme and James Van Sweden created what became called The New American Garden typified by
broad sweeps of grasses and perennials. Their gardens took cues from the natural landscape around
them and employed site specific plants ideally suited to the locale, instead of fussy exotics
needing constant upkeep.
Senior partner Sheila Brady continues the design aesthetic of Oehme, Van Sweden and Associates, Inc.
with stunning public gardens for the Chicago Botanic Garden and the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC.
We visited two private gardens designed by OVSLA. James Van Sweden has written several books on
gardens and garden design. These include:
Architecture in the Garden, Bold Romantic Gardens, Gardening with Nature, and Gardening with Water all from
Random House Publishing.
