Inside San Quentin Prison, a garden grows hearts and minds
The Insight Garden Program (IGP) rehabilitates prisoners at San Quentin State Prison through the process of organic gardening. By working in nature, participants learn vocational and life skills so they can practice constructive relationships between themselves, their communities and the natural environment and become productive members of society.
Research on horticultural therapy supports the notion that in the act of caring for plants, the qualities of responsibility, discipline and mindfulness transfer to the interpersonal realm—by growing plants, people will “grow.” By working in nature, participants gain a greater sense of self as well as a larger understanding of their connection to and impact on the world around them. Throughout the program, they also develop vocational skills they can leverage for gainful employment once they leave prison.
