Salvias: Hot color for late summer gardens

Betsy Clebsch has grown hundreds of salvias in her gardens. The rich array of salvias shown today are coming available in garden centers and mail order catalogs all over the country. Many salvias thrive in heat, sun and dry conditions, making them invaluable in pots and gardens to bust up the "August blahs."   Many are hardy and all attract butterflies and hummingbirds.
Betsy has written two books on salvias, the latest is The New Book of Salvias available from
www.timberpress.com or 800-327-5680

Creepy crawly bugs: The San Francisco Zoo, Insect Zoo

The Insect Zoo is part of the Children's Zoo at the San Francisco Zoo. The Insect Zoo helps to expose and educate children and adults to the often vital roles that these creatures play in our environment.  While many of the insects seen today are exotic, they help illustrate in a larger scale, many related bugs that inhabit are gardens.
The Insect Zoo is just one part of the larger efforts at education and conservation conducted by the Zoo and it's programs.
To visit the Insect Zoo, please check out the San Francisco Zoo website for hours and admission.

Special thanks to Patrick, Alexander and the interns in the Insect Zoo!
