Chicago Botanic Garden: Inspiring everyday people with “Take Home Ideas” for their own gardens

Garden director, Chris Jarintoski, showed Dave all around the varied gardens of
Chicago Botanic Garden.  The garden strives to display plants in creative combinations that homeowners can take home and enjoy in their own backyards.  Gardens they visited today included the shady woodland and water gardens of Spider Island, the bold colorful displays in the Circle Garden and the dramatic Smith Fountain.  After a visit to the Railroad Garden, complete with tiny replicas of famous American buildings crafted of natural materials, Dave and Chris ended their exploration on Evening Island in a bold prairie-style landscape surrounding the signature Carillon tower.

The garden is open year round with highlights in every season, from the first winter bulbs to the fiery foliage and berries of fall.  Plus, there are many special events at CBG, including lectures, tours, and concert series.

Sustainable agriculture grows a better cup of coffee: Kauai Coffee

On the Island of Kauai, a former sugar plantation has converted its crop from cane to growing fine estate coffees.  Dave explored the plantation of Kauai Coffee with a special behind the scenes look at the entire process.  From growing the trees, to pruning and harvesting to the special “cupping” procedure that ensures the finest beans make it into coffee cusp across the nation.  New sustainable practices help Kauai Coffee be a good steward of the land that has been in cultivation since the early 1800’s.  Mulching with cherry pulp reduces weeds and the need for synthetic fertilizers.  Drip irrigation reduces water consumption and encourages deep rooting.  Water recycling reduces water waste from the processing plant.  Contour planting and hedgerows reduce erosion and storm-water runoff.  Wild preservation areas attract migratory birds.  Hydroelectric power reduces the factory’s dependence on foreign petroleum.

Kauai Coffee is available from the plantation gift shop, online, by phone, and from select retailers.
