Colorful flowers and foliage for year round interest: Heaths and Heathers
In beautiful Shelton, Washington a colorful garden of heaths (Erica) and heathers (Calluna) was planted by Karla Lortz to display her huge collection of these hardy evergreen shrublets that she offers though her mail order nursery, Heaths and Heathers. Erica, Calluna, and Daboecia offer both interesting foliage and rich flower color that adds sparkle to the garden all year long. Many Calluna have richly colored winter foliage to add even more interest to your bank, rock garden, or shrub border. You can stroll through the garden on special Open Days or arrange a personal appointment to view the collection. Or visit their popular display and sales booth at the Northwest Flower and Garden Show in Seattle or the San Francisco Flower and Garden Show.

An authentic Chinese Garden grows on American Soil: Portland Classical Chinese Garden
In the heart of Portland, Oregon stands a garden that perfectly blends horticulture, architecture, and literature into a stunning space.
The Portland Classical Chinese Garden or Lan Su Yuan (Garden of Awakening Orchids) was hand crafted by Chinese artisans using traditional materials and techniques to create pavilions, bridges, and water features accented by magnificent specimens of Asian flora.
Of special note are inscriptions that appear all through the garden and structures. The inscriptions come to life on the pages of Listen to the Fragrance: Literary Inscriptions in Lan Su Yuan by Charles Wu, professor emeritus of Chinese and humanities at
Reed College, Portland OR.
The garden is open daily to enjoy with the price of admission and can also host special events such as corporate functions or weddings.
