Green Chicago, an interview with Mayor Richard M. Daley.

Mr. Mayor invited us to view his groundbreaking green roof high atop City Hall in downtown Chicago.  While the living roof is not open to the public, it serves as an example to reduce energy consumption by insulating the building from cold and heat, reduce rainwater runoff, encourage pollinators and birds within the urban landscape and beautify the view from surrounding buildings.
Mr. Mayor has worked with public and private entities to encourage green building all over the city along with major improvements to city parks, streetscapes, and schools.  Ambitious projects include replacing old civic building roofs with green, growing ones; installing rainwater recycling to reduce stormwater run off and permeable paving in alleyways and parking lots.
To learn more about Mayor Daley's plan to help keep Chicago green, how you can get involved and resources for making your home, apartment or office more eco-friendly, visit the Department of Environment web page on the City of Chicago website.

Millennium Park, the world's largest living roof.

For over a century the lakeshore of Chicago was blighted by an unsightly railyard, parking lots and traffic. Embarking on a plan first conceived in the late 19th century, urban planners embarked on an ambitious project to build an exciting public venue and dynamic urban space to disguise a massive underground parking structure and rail lines with a living roof and sculpture.
The result is Millennium Park.  From the Lurie Garden carpeted with thousands of prairie native flowers to the Jay Pritzker Pavilion by Frank Gehry with it's undulating steel wings, the park is now Chicago's top attraction.
The park is open daily and you can learn more by visiting the Millennium park website:
